OpinionUP holds regular debates on current events and trending topics of interest every Tuesday at 8PM EST. Debate winners are selected by their fellow debate participants. Get to know the winner of the debate, “Gun Control vs. Gun Rights”: @emcla!
1. What person do you most admire?
Stephen Hawking; he created a whole branch of scientific study and did it through unbelievable adversity. He challenged everyone’s perception of space, time, and human ability.
2. What is your biggest life goal?
To (hopefully) become a doctor; eventually being a physician would be the culmination of years of a love for science, helping others, and innovation. It would mean more to me than simply getting a PhD because it allows for the ability to treat patients.
3. What’s your favorite book?
Just Mercy; it was actually required reading for freshmen at my university and I was fully prepared to hate it. This was one of the best books I’ve ever read because it takes you through numerous death row inmates lives as their lawyer uncovers evidence about their innocence. It humanizes the prisoners and shows you a new side of things. (Honorable mention: Brain on Fire)
4. Do you believe in any conspiracy theories?
I’m not sure how many I truly “believe,” but I love reading all about them. All I’m saying is that it would make perfect sense that Amelia Earhart survived and was out there somewhere.
5. Do you have a favorite sports team?
The Columbus Blue Jackets
6. What series do you enjoy binge watching on Netflix?
7. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Mac and cheese
8. Would you rather have a billion dollars or be president?
Have a billion dollars; it’s the same type of lifestyle but none of the difficult choices and responsibility that come with leading a country.
9. Is there anything else you would like the OpinionUP community to know?
I really appreciate all of the different (respectful) opinions in the community. Even when people have the same viewpoint they may have a new spin that I never considered. I always leave a debate (whether it be organized, in the comment section, or through direct messages) with a new outlook on the scope of something. I also have to mention how awesome it is getting to communicate with a community with more conservatives than on other platforms, it’s nice to see a place where there’s the potential for mature conversation without immediate invalidation.
